Lorain County commissioners approve $300,000 to help soil and water district secure state match

The Lorain County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved a $300,000 allocation from the county general fund to the Lorain Soil and Water Conservation District to help the district secure state matching funds for its 2026 budget.

County staff told the commissioners the allocation is consistent with previous years’ funding and noted the amount enables the district to obtain additional state match. A county staff member said the general fund has varied in prior years but “over the last 3 years, that amount has been $300,000,” and that there is a deadline in April to obtain the state match.

The motion to approve the allocation was moved by a commissioner and seconded; the board recorded aisles from the commissioners present. The chair conducted a voice roll call; the commissioners present — recorded on the roll as Commissioner Wardell and Mr. Gallagher — were each recorded as voting “Aye,” and the motion passed.

Carl Weese Meyer, who identified himself to the board as vice chair of the soil and water board, thanked the commissioners and described program needs. “It’s very important for us to have this money. We’ve expanded our staff immensely,” Meyer said, adding the district is working closely with the county engineer on ditch projects and a range of agricultural-related efforts.

A county staff member told the board the county had set aside the $300,000 in its 2026 budget and said approving the allocation is a recognition to allow the state of Ohio to match the funds rather than an increase to the general fund budget previously approved in December. The staff member also stated the district’s detailed request totaled $3,300,000.

After the vote the board adjourned. No further actions or implementation details were specified during the meeting.
