County officials told commissioners the backlog currently affects about 100 unclaimed decedents and that a typical funeral-and-burial cost for indigent cases is about $4,056. County administration said Medicaid can reimburse up to $5,000 for eligible decedents, and the emergency funding will allow the county to partner with local funeral homes on an interim basis while officials plan for a more open solicitation process for vendors.
Commissioners approved the emergency appropriation by roll call. County staff said contracts with previously used funeral providers had expired and the county expects to run a request-for-qualifications to broaden vendor participation for future work.
What’s next: Administration will deploy the emergency funds to contract with funeral providers, prioritize family notification and finalize a procurement path for longer-term vendor agreements.
