The Aurora East USD 131 Buildings & Grounds Committee on Thursday recommended that the full board approve the purchase of roughly 2,500 Lenovo Chromebooks for second, sixth and ninth graders at a total price of $1,152,500, with an advanced warranty package.
Staff member (S2) told the committee that the quotes are firm for a short window and urged immediate action. "Approximately 2,500 Lenovo Chromebooks for next year from NorthStar... $1,152,500 with the advanced, warranty package," S2 said. He added that "if we don't execute tonight, it goes up a $125,000." The committee agreed to forward the purchase as a board action that evening.
The devices would be distributed on a grade-cycle plan: second graders receive devices to keep through fifth grade (a four-year cycle), middle-school devices run on a three-year rotation, and high-school devices on a four-year cycle with seniors eligible to keep a device upon graduation if they enroll and sign out the unit. S2 said salvageable units are reused for loaners and that prices for these models have risen sharply in recent months because of processor shortages.
Committee members asked about funding and documentation. S2 said the purchase will come from the district's technology budget, with prior purchases of carts and some earlier device batches funded by ESSER grants in prior years. Board members also discussed the volatility of hardware pricing and the practical limits of vendor quotes: S2 said price quotes typically are only good for two weeks.
The committee’s action was procedural: the Buildings & Grounds Committee recommended the contract and directed staff to include the vendor, price and warranty details in the board action. The final decision rests with the full board at its next meeting.
