Sumner School District presents progress on Sumner and Bonney Lake high school projects

Marina Teney, the district's director of capital projects (presenting), updated the Sumner School District board on the schematic design (SD) and design development (DD) status for two major high school projects: Sumner High School and Bonney Lake High School.

Marina told the board both projects have completed SD and DD, are currently "in for permit," and are moving toward the construction documents phase (the next, more detailed design step). She said Sumner High School is "well under budget" at the DD stage and described programmatic elements for both schools: expanded robotics and a reconfigured CAD lab at Bonney Lake High School; broad CTE offerings at Sumner including culinary arts, photography and video; and upgraded spaces for students with specialized needs. Marina emphasized the district's focus on delivering appropriate spaces and equipment for program needs.

Board members asked detailed operational questions during the presentation. A member asked about the location of the culinary kitchen and how food will be transported to different floors; Marina noted there are two large elevators that can handle substantial carts and the design includes appropriate vertical circulation. Another member confirmed a covered roof will be provided over the childcare area. The presenter characterized the projects as progressing well and expressed no major concerns about either program or schedule in the DD phase.

Marina closed by noting construction documents are next and reiterated that staff are confident about budget and permit progress; the transcript records board appreciation and no formal action other than receiving the update.
