Dr. Lydia Borges, introduced to the board as the presenter on the district’s math adoption, told trustees the recommendation followed a nearly two‑year pilot, training funded in part by a $38,000 grant, and a structured evaluation that used EdReports ratings and a six‑domain hexagon tool from the National Implementation Research Network. "We selected the program that best aligned with our instructional focus and powerful practices," she said, describing I‑Ready’s learning trajectories, embedded supports for multilingual learners and teacher planning tools.
Why it matters: staff said the California mathematics framework adopted in 2023 emphasizes deeper conceptual understanding, coherence across grades and inquiry‑based instruction. The district argued I‑Ready better matches the district’s gradual‑release instructional approach and offers parent resources, Spanish support and digital diagnostics.
What staff presented: the pilot included classroom trials across 12 schools with 28 teachers and about 739 students; vendors demonstrated features and district teams scored programs on capacity, fit, need, evidence, usability and supports. Staff said two programs reached the final stage—Classroom Mathematics California (I‑Ready) and Envision Math—but I‑Ready most closely aligned to the district’s defined instructional practices.
Questions and outreach: trustees asked about comparative analysis between candidates, how advanced students would be served and how parents would access resources. Staff said most content overlapped among finalists but I‑Ready provided clearer alignment to the district’s instructional framework and parent materials accessible via QR codes without a login.
Next steps: the materials are on display in the district atrium and the district has opened a 30‑day public comment window; staff said feedback will be shared with trustees before a March 3 approval vote. If approved, staff planned to order materials in March and begin onboarding K–5 teachers April 13 for full implementation the following academic year.
