Library officials report rising use after renovations; county project team outlines closeout work

Steve DeMar, president of the Library Commission, highlighted steady community use since the cultural center’s December opening and described renewed teen and family programming. DeMar said outreach and mobile library visits have continued to expand and noted robust attendance figures for story time and library programs.
Megan Wong, Solano County interim director of library services, told the board both Town Square and Cultural Center branches are operating at or above preclosure levels and that story‑time attendance and program participation have increased. Wong also explained a forthcoming staffing change: Michael Eitner will begin as director of library services on March 30.
Tim Reynolds, capital projects for Solano County, and project manager Michael Koss summarized closeout work for the Vacaville Cultural Center Library. They reported repairs for minor plumbing and roof trade damage (warranty in place), owner‑directed changes such as trash enclosures and additional fencing, sprinkler reconfiguration, and replacement or reconfiguration of front‑end controllers following city requirements. Reynolds said roughly 9% of a 10% contingency was used and that the project remains under budget overall.
Following that presentation, the board approved a motion to delegate authority to the Solano County Library Director to negotiate and execute remaining change orders with Gilbane Building Company for the Vacaville Cultural Center Library project in an amount not to exceed $946,570; the board recorded the vote as 6–0.
The presentation included a preview of upcoming library programming (science bowl, Club Creative and family movie nights) and outreach efforts to extend services into schools through a delivery/pickup option currently serving eight schools.
Board members asked questions about contingency use and award recognition; county staff said award opportunities exist and confirmed contingency levels and causes for additional work.
