The board discussed contracting with the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) for three governance items: a strategic planning session, board evaluations and the superintendent evaluation.
The chair recommended moving forward with TSBA because two of the items are required by policy and because the association can provide a compact strategic planning session and board evaluation tools. Staff estimated a combined cost between $2,500 and $3,000 for the services and said TSBA requested a majority of board members be present for a seven‑hour strategic planning retreat-style session.
"Originally, I was quoted 2,500 for the strategic planning and the board evaluations and $500 for the superintendent evaluation...they do require a 7‑hour retreat to do a strategic planning," staff said, adding that TSBA does not do weekend sessions and that the district could schedule an 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekday session to meet the requirement. The chair noted completing TSBA work before June 30 would satisfy the board's annual training requirement.
Board members expressed general support for starting the work and asked staff to contact TSBA with possible dates and return recommendations at the voting meeting.
