The Commissioners Court approved routine consent items, including employee promotions and the use of asset-forfeiture funds to acquire a specialty vehicle, but commissioners pressed staff to document how ongoing fuel, maintenance and liability costs will be handled.
Commissioner Webb asked the court to ensure repairs and fuel for the forfeiture-funded vehicle would not be placed on the county's repair-replace list and confirmed with staff that fuel charges would be billed through the county fuel-card system and then charged to the Sheriff's forfeiture fund. "The gasoline will be billed," Monica Aris said, explaining the mechanics of county fuel-card billing and subsequent forfeiture-fund reimbursement.
Human Resources' Cynthia Jacobson warned that county risk/self-insurance does not cover vehicles that are not part of the county plan. "We do not cover the vehicles that are not part of our plan," she said, prompting commissioners to request that liability and funding source language be included in the motion so there is no later dispute over who pays for repairs or claims.
The court approved the consent item on a 5-0 voice vote while directing staff to capture the billing and liability arrangements in the motion record and ensure fleet department responsibilities (fleet will not perform repairs on this vehicle) are clear.
