Commissioners on Tuesday approved a reclassification of magistrate clerks, with a condition that the clerks continue performing the duties that justified the change.
Commissioner Webb moved to approve the reclassification "conditioned on the magistrate clerks continuing to perform all of their current duties and the duties used to justify the reclassification," and the motion passed 5-0.
District Clerk Gold told the court that the reclassification and the associated job set were not linked to two specific courtroom days that had previously been handled differently; he said staffing changes that had removed a clerk from one courtroom on some days were not part of the job description the county was approving. "We're not going to take anybody out of the courtroom; somebody from the district clerk's office will be in that courtroom every Tuesday and every Thursday," District Clerk Gold said, addressing concerns about coverage for magistration hearings and additional quality-control/reporting duties required by SB 9.
Commissioners also asked the district clerk to monitor whether overtime or additional hours will be needed to meet new reporting requirements; District Clerk Gold said he is evaluating that possibility.
The court recorded the motion and approved it unanimously, with the clerk's office confirming the coverage and the retention of previously performed duties.
