On April 22 Homestead City Council adopted an ordinance establishing smoke‑free parks, prohibiting smoking and vaping in city park areas subject to state‑law limitations.
Aníbal Garcia of the Florida Department of Health in Miami‑Dade called the measure forward during public comment, arguing that smoke‑free parks help reduce youth exposure to tobacco and vaping products, reduce litter (including disposable vape devices and lithium‑ion batteries) and signal that parks are family health spaces. Councilmembers supported the ordinance and the item passed unanimously.
The ordinance sets definitions, signage and enforcement mechanisms for the parks system; staff said education and signage will accompany enforcement to encourage voluntary compliance. Councilmembers noted the ordinance is intended to protect youth and park users and to reduce environmental hazards associated with discarded vaping devices.
The ordinance passed on second reading; staff and health partners will coordinate signage and community education.
