Residents press Fayette County board for transparency on enrollment, funding and community involvement

Several residents used the public comment period at the Jan. 6 Fayette County School Board meeting to press the board for more transparency and community outreach.

Elton Holmes asked how a proposed district name change would improve enrollment and posed specific questions about how homeschool and private-school students would be funded if required to enroll in district programs, who would pay for certified instructors and electric buses, and what the district's security policy entails. "How will the district’s name change improve enrollment?" Holmes asked, listing several items he said had not received adequate board response.

Lamar Hobson said the phrase "community involvement" felt vague and asked who is being consulted, saying parents, veterans and local stakeholders have not been sufficiently engaged. During his remarks, Hobson made personal and inappropriate statements directed at a board member and was asked to leave the meeting.

Civil Miller-Watkins recognized School Board Appreciation Week and urged the board to advocate for the community currently served, highlighted Fayette-Ware’s Level 5 recognition and reminded the board of the Teacher Paycheck Protection Act requirement of $50,000 by 2026. A speaker identified as Melody M. offered a prayer asking the board to act with humility and integrity.

The Chair concluded the public speaking period after the scheduled commenters finished. Several questions raised by residents were not resolved during the meeting and were left for later staff follow-up or future agenda items.
