Committee advances TISA accountability report and a set of updated policies to the full board

At committee meetings Oct. 23, Fayette County Public Schools moved its annual TISA Accountability Report and several revised policies to the full board for consideration.

Mr. Keel presented the TISA Accountability Report, required by state law, which showed a 6.2% increase in third-grade ELA and a 14% gain in high school English II, while noting a slight overall decline across elementary and junior high grades (0.4%). The report highlighted alignment changes — for example, eighth-grade math aligning more closely with Algebra I — and underscored ongoing professional development. On a motion by Chairman Speakman and seconded by Mr. Powers, the committee voted unanimously to send the TISA report to the full board with no changes to current goals.

Separately, the Policy Committee reviewed and forwarded Policy 1.300 (committee structure and meeting schedule) after board-attorney guidance and also voted to send a large set of reviewed policies (Policies 1.407–1.906) to the full board. Committee discussions recommended clarifications on public records submission procedures, wording adjustments ("will" versus "shall"), citizen-comment procedures in light of recent case law, and referrals to the Tennessee School Boards Association for wording guidance where appropriate.

The Safety & Security Committee discussed campus security observations from recent LDF visits and agreed to place a proposal to maintain a metal-detection security checkpoint during committee and full board meetings on the next full-board agenda; any sustained checkpoint would require a budget allocation by the full board.

All forwarded items will appear on an upcoming full-board agenda; the committees did not enact permanent policy changes at the committee level.
