Jefferson Innovative Learning Center posts 100% graduation; athletics program eyes new sports and equity measures

The Jefferson Innovative Learning Center (JILC), the district’s alternative program for students who are two or more grades behind or who face behavioral challenges, reported a 100% graduation rate this year, district staff told the Education, Sports and CTE Committee on Oct. 23. Mr. Stokes said JILC uses transcript evaluations, individualized graduation plans, block scheduling and computer-assisted programs that allow students to earn up to 24 credits in 24 months.
Stokes credited JILC staff — including Ms. Turner, Ms. Moore, Ms. Hayes and Ms. Jackson — and a range of community partners for the results, naming RJ Lee CDL Training, Why Not Financial Group, House of Faith Ministries and Regions Bank as contributors to mentorship and parent-support programs. He said the program plans parent college sessions focused on computer literacy and financial skills, and recently added a School Resource Officer to enhance school safety.
In the athletics update, Stokes highlighted offerings across elementary to high school and noted district achievements such as district and regional championships and alumni moving on to collegiate and professional teams. To expand participation and equity, the district proposed merging East and West football programs and adding girls’ flag football, boys’ volleyball and golf. Other initiatives include providing CDL certification opportunities for coaches, standardizing sports vendors, pursuing facility improvements and creating clearer access pathways for homeschool students who wish to participate.
Committee members praised the reports. Chair Warner Speakman suggested sharing short meeting clips on social media to showcase programs to parents and the wider Fayette County community. Mr. Wilson asked Stokes to emphasize NBA/NFL alumni and former championships in future presentations. The committee did not take a formal action beyond discussing how to promote the programs; Stokes’ report will be part of information presented to the full board where applicable.
The committee held this report at the Education, Sports and CTE Committee meeting at the CAB Board Room at 6:00 PM on Oct. 23, 2025. No final vote or policy change on the JILC model or athletics programs was recorded at committee; many proposed initiatives will require separate approvals or budget items at later meetings.
