Fayette County school board approves broad consent agenda, clears policy wording edits for TSBA review

The Fayette County Public Schools Board unanimously approved a broad consent agenda on Jan. 6 that included a budget fund transfer, an E-Rate internet contract, field-trip and grant approvals, and extensive policy readings.
The board amended the consent motion to allow minor grammatical and wording changes to first-read policies to be reviewed by the board secretary, TSBA and committee members before they return for second reading. Harold Rounds noted numerous instances where wording such as “will” should be changed to “shall,” and the board agreed to have those edits handled administratively prior to final votes. Kevin Powers moved the consent agenda; Merrel Miller seconded, and all present voted in favor.
The items on the consent agenda included a budget amendment (fund transfer 141 to 142), approval of an E-Rate 2026 Internet Access and Managed WAN mini-bid contract, overnight and out-of-state field trip approval for a Greece 2027 trip, and proposed purchases tied to a virtual welding equipment program grant. The board also moved a large set of annual policies through first reading (policy series 2.100–2.810 and related items) and approved several policies on second and final reading (including 1.407, 1.501, 1.502 and others).
Chairman Warner Speakman and staff said the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) would be contacted through board secretary procedures to review the suggested wording changes; the motion recorded Ben Torres at TSBA as the contact point. The board recorded the amendment and the main motion as passing unanimously.
The approvals clear the way for staff to finalize recommended wording and return affected policies for formal second readings and adoption at future meetings.
