Board flags duplicate content and accuracy concerns amid textbook adoption review

Committee chair Harold Rounds said proposed Career and Technical Education (CTE) textbooks duplicate material from previously approved science books, noted terminology changes such as replacing “hypothesis” with “claim,” and pointed to inaccuracies in diagrams and pluralization. Board members also flagged social-studies and English selections that expose students to diverse literature in early grades without sufficient local-context grounding and noted that some reference materials are a decade old.
Board members requested a grade-by-grade outline of content to ensure alignment with instructional objectives, discussed the need for additional funding to update resources and answer curriculum-alignment questions, and asked Sergeant Hall to brief the committee on how JROTC’s standardized elements align with district requirements. The board agreed staff should continue careful evaluation before formal adoption.
