At the start of its March 5 meeting the Fayette County Public Schools board voted to suspend the portion of its policy that requires the chair to visually identify remote participants so Board Member Melanie McGuire could participate by phone after reporting she was ill with the flu.
Board discussion reviewed the policy’s standard that electronic participation is permitted only when technology allows the chair to visually identify the remote member and that a participating member bears responsibility for establishing a connection. David Reeves summarized those policy points during the discussion. Mr. Hill attempted to establish FaceTime or another visual connection during the meeting but the board ultimately approved suspending the visual-identification requirement for McGuire, with Kevin Powers moving and Becky Trimm seconding the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Board members said the suspension was limited to the present meeting and noted the policy normally restricts repeated reconnection attempts unless the board approves additional attempts.
