Superintendent reports $3.5 million shortfall and storm damage; district seeks emergency reimbursement

Superintendent Dr. McPherson told the Fayette County Public Schools Board on Feb. 9 that the district is confronting a budget shortfall of more than $3.5 million and is reviewing line items to avoid personnel loss.
Dr. McPherson described operational challenges after recent severe winter weather, including a partially collapsed awning at West Junior High and cooler failures at Oakland Elementary and East Junior High that led to more than $5,000 in lost food. He said district staff have addressed the immediate damages and will work with emergency management (EMA) to seek reimbursement under the emergency declaration.
He thanked the sheriff’s office, EMA, maintenance personnel, and transportation staff for their response, and specifically acknowledged the work of Mr. Kee in managing logistics. Dr. McPherson also noted that school nurses completed a Narcan certification program and that a consent order originally scheduled for the week had been delayed to the last week in February because of weather.
Board members did not vote on budget measures at the meeting but were informed that the superintendent, Mr. Kee and Ms. Elliott are reviewing every line item to minimize job impacts while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
