Fayette County Schools report GPS rollout, new video campaign and community food drive

At its Nov. 6 meeting the Fayette County School Board received several operational updates from district staff.
Merrel Miller reported on the Athena transportation project, saying all but three buses already have new GPS units installed and radio installations are expected to finish in two to three weeks; work to make bus cameras fully operational is underway. District staff are training on new routing software that officials say will improve efficiency, reduce the number of buses and drivers needed, and allow the district to assume full operation of the system within three to four months.
In a separate presentation, Elizabeth Smith and Kathy Foster introduced a JILC video campaign titled “The Road Ahead,” which the presenters said will release a new video each week to highlight student pathways and district programs; the board discussed sharing the videos through email and the district website.
Superintendent Dr. McPherson highlighted recent student achievements — including football and elementary county champions — and said the district will host Thanksgiving lunches on Nov. 19–21. He also encouraged participation in a district food drive collecting canned chicken, tuna and instant mashed potatoes with a goal of 300 items to support families affected by SNAP program interruptions. Dr. McPherson recognized Chason Yates of Fayette‑Ware High School for being invited to deliver a keynote at the Tennessee School Boards Association conference.
Board members did not take formal action on the transportation software implementation or the video campaign during the meeting; staff indicated further implementation work and training will continue.
