Before the closed session the court heard extended public comment from veterans, family members and service‑provider partners who spoke in support of the director, describing program expansion, outreach and veteran peer‑support activities. Several speakers described the department’s expansion from two to ten service locations and credited the director with securing grants and partnerships that increased benefits claims and local services. "The service members, veterans and military families of Bexar County deserve leadership that is focused on serving them," one social‑work professional told commissioners.
After executive session commissioners returned to open session and approved the personnel motion. Commissioners said the decision followed a review of confidential investigative and personnel materials and that those records are not appropriate for public release. Commissioner Moody said he appreciated the director's service and the difficulty of the decision, and described the vote as intended to "protect the ship" and department operations. Several commissioners asked staff to ensure continuity of veteran services during the leadership change.
The court approved an interim appointment to fill the executive director position while the county proceeds with personnel and operational steps. County staff said veterans programs and peer support services will continue, and that the court expects staff to report back on service continuity and any recommended staffing or policy actions.
Public commenters and advocates urged the court to ensure that veteran services remain resourced and to consider the programmatic consequences of the personnel action. County officials said investigations and personnel files are confidential and that the court's action reflects the outcome of those processes.
