Oakland Elementary reports TVAAS gains, highlights interventions and community support

Oakland Elementary Principal Dr. Jackson told the Fayette County Public Schools Education, Sports and CTE Committee that the school has made measurable academic gains and improved its TVAAS designation. “The school serves approximately 560 students and recently improved from a Level 1 to a Level 3 TVAAS distinction,” she said, attributing the progress to weekly Professional Learning Communities, collaborative teacher planning, daily intervention and tutoring, frequent data meetings, and benchmark-driven instruction.

Dr. Jackson described schoolwide initiatives designed to reinforce basic skills and writing across grades, including math fact fluency practice and a program called Writing Wednesday. She said the master schedule allows grade-level teams to plan together daily, strengthening instructional consistency, and pointed to a tiered discipline framework aligned to district expectations that has reduced behavioral incidents.

The principal also highlighted enrichment opportunities — art, music, PE, a learning lab for targeted reading interventions and gifted programming for grades 3–5 — and said volunteers and community partnerships bolster student engagement through family nights, academic showcases and recognition programs. Dr. Jackson said targeted reading interventions began after winter benchmark testing and that the district will assess progress with upcoming benchmarks and TCAP results.

Board members commended Oakland Elementary’s growth and community involvement. The committee received the report; no formal action was taken at the committee level. The Education, Sports and CTE Committee adjourned at 6:39 p.m.
