Several public commenters urged Cameron County Commissioners to resist tax abatements for companies they described as weapons manufacturers and autonomous‑AI contractors proposed to locate at the Port of Brownsville.
"Creating weapons and weapons of mass destruction, this is immoral, and we do not need this in the Valley," Dr. Christopher Basaldu said during public comment, urging the court not to grant tax breaks. Dr. Adin Rosas, a public‑policy researcher and former congressional candidate, likewise urged rejection of abatements for companies he described as courting the region to build military‑facing AI capabilities.
On the agenda, the court voted to cancel or table scheduled public hearings related to Ceronic/Ceramic/Sarani tax abatements and later authorized publishing a public notice with a June 2 hearing date for a Seronic (spelled variously in the record) tax‑abatement notice, authorizing the county judge to sign the notice.
A court spokesperson and staff noted the items would be republished with appropriate notice; the commissioners did not adopt or deny any abatement at this meeting.
The court also recorded motions to table related phased abatement items and to reschedule formal public hearings so the county can provide additional notice and review.
