Resident urges reversal of CTE renaming, cites desegregation order

Elton Holmes of Somerville urged the Fayette County school board to reverse a recent renaming of the career and technical education building, saying the district remains under a desegregation order and that legal oversight prevents unilateral creation of a new school name.
"No new school can be created without agreement between the LDF, the district, and the judge," Holmes said during public comment, and he asked that the building’s name be changed back to "CCTE." He also criticized deputies wearing full uniforms at board meetings as intimidating and said the district’s policy allowing approval on first reading shortchanges community input.
Board members did not take questions during the public-comment period; Dr. McPherson told Holmes that the remarks would be documented and responded to later. The Education, Sports & CTE Committee subsequently discussed signage and the previously approved rename to "Fayette County Career and Technology Academy," but members agreed the matter requires legal clarification and a full-board decision and voted to table further action until full-board consideration.
The public comment and the committee’s motion to delay further action leave the renaming unresolved; the district cautioned that any formal change will proceed through the full board and, where applicable, with legal counsel review.
