Commissioners approve support letter for Point Broadband application despite map, timing concerns

The Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a letter supporting Point Broadband’s application for broadband grant funding after a period of debate about the application’s completeness and timing.

Commissioner Nelson raised concerns that the packet lacked a map showing the company’s intended service area and questioned whether a nonlocal vendor might claim territory already targeted by other providers. "If they're taking...a territory and maybe from someone else that's planning on doing that same thing to get ahead on the money," Nelson said, urging more information before lending official support.

Commissioner Andrews, who moved approval, said the county’s role is not to pick among vendors but to ensure residents get service: "I don't think our concern is to pick among the companies. It's to ensure that our residents get service, get broadband service," he said. The board approved the motion on roll call; Commissioner Nelson voted no and all other recorded commissioners voted yes.
