Athens City Schools report 1,626 enrollment and 95.74% attendance; board schedules discussion on voucher lawsuit

Director of Schools Joe Barnett reported the district’s attendance at 95.74% and total enrollment at 1,626 students during the Dec. 8 board meeting.
Barnett also provided a personnel update and reviewed the November 2025 financial summary reports for General Purpose and Federal Projects, noting the packet included November 2024 reports for comparison. The documents referenced were included in the minutes book for the record.
In new business, board member Johnny Coffman requested that the Jan. 28, 2026 work session include discussion of the voucher lawsuit involving several Tennessee school systems and consideration of a Knox County School System resolution supporting a legislative priority affirming a commitment to free public education for all students. The board added those two items to the Jan. 28 work session agenda.
No members of the public spoke during the public comment period.
