Director Barnett earns strong evaluations; enrollment steady and staff recognized

Board Chair Chris Adams reviewed the Director of Schools27 evaluation at the Jan. 12, 2026 Athens City Board of Education meeting, reporting that Joe Barnett received a 4.35 rating from Athens City Schools professional and administrative staff (maximum 5.0) and a 4.81 rating from board members. Adams congratulated Barnett and said Athens City Schools is fortunate to have a director who cares about students27 success.
Director Barnett provided a personnel update for December 2025 and reported district attendance as of Dec. 15, 2025 was 94.44 percent; total enrollment was 1,618 students. The minutes note that supporting documents are included in the minutes book but are not reproduced in the transcript.
The board also used the meeting to recognize student and staff achievements. The Athens City Middle School 2025-2026 Girls Soccer Team was celebrated. RISE award recipients acknowledged for December 2025/January 2026 included Chelsea Hyde (Athens City Middle), Betty Powers (Athens City Primary), Lindsay Thomas (Athens City Intermediate) and Brooke Newman (Central Office). Melody Armstrong announced Teacher of the Year winners for 2025-2026: Mandy Million (Athens City Middle, district winner), Cayci Powers (Athens City Primary) and Leidy Newton (Athens City Intermediate). Novice Teacher winners Alyssa Miller and Carmen Turnbough and recognitions for Principal of the Year Dr. Kristine Walden and Supervisor of the Year Brittany Derrick were also recorded.
No members of the public spoke during the open comment period. The meeting adjourned at 6:44 p.m.
