Committee authorizes staff to work with Historical Society on tax-roll books; public notice requested

The General Government Committee on Sept. 3 authorized County Clerk J. Pedretti and Administrative Coordinator Cassie Hanan to work with the Vernon County Historical Society to repeal a Dec. 4, 2018 agreement that had the Historical Society storing county tax roll books free of charge.
Committee members heard that records-retention statutes require tax rolls be retained for 15 years, but the Historical Society’s holdings include volumes much older than that. Pedretti said those records were moved to electronic storage by the county and that records from years ending in 0 or 5 already are stored at a library in La Crosse. The Historical Society indicated it would keep one or two years from each decade and would like to dispose of the remainder.
Supervisor Eggen moved and Supervisor Henry seconded the authorization for staff to work with the Historical Society to repeal the 2018 agreement; the motion carried on a voice vote. Supervisor Henry asked that staff provide public notice in case members of the public wish to claim or preserve any of the books slated for disposal.
Next steps: Pedretti and Hanan will coordinate with the Historical Society on the agreement repeal and will develop a public-notice plan before any materials are removed from storage.
