The Vernon County General Government Committee voted Sept. 3 to ask staff to draft a resolution amending county board meeting rules so the statutory annual meeting required by Wis. Stat. 59.11(1)(a) will be held during the regularly scheduled October County Board meeting rather than on the date that will fall on Veterans Day this year.
County Clerk J. Pedretti told the committee the statute calls for the annual County Board meeting on the Tuesday following the second Monday in November (or an earlier date in October or November by board rule) and that in election years it has been challenging to conduct the Board of Canvass and hold the County Board meeting on that schedule. Supervisor John Lawler moved and Supervisor David Goede seconded a motion to draft a resolution adopting the new rule; the motion carried on a voice vote.
The draft resolution will recommend that, unless noticed otherwise, the regularly scheduled meeting of the Vernon County Board occur on the third Thursday of each month (except April and November as required by Wisconsin statute) and that the statutory annual meeting referenced in Wis. Stat. 59.11(1)(a) be held at the regularly scheduled October meeting. The committee recommended the resolution for passage by the full County Board; no formal County Board action occurred at the committee meeting.
Next steps: staff will prepare the resolution language for review by the committee and send it to the County Board for consideration at a future meeting.
