The Calvert County Board of Education approved three administrative appointments during its May 4 meeting. The board accepted recommendations from Dr. Newsom and voted to appoint Dr. Michelle Smith as executive director for elementary schools, Cecilia Lewis as executive director for secondary schools, and Deborah Baker as assistant principal at St. Leonard Elementary School.
The appointments were introduced by Dr. Newsom and supported by motions and seconds from board members; the second nomination vote was recorded as carrying by a 5‑member majority. In recommending Dr. Michelle Smith, Dr. Newsom outlined her service as principal of Windy Hill Elementary, assistant principal and core mathematics lead at Honeytown High School, and teaching roles at Plum Point Middle School. Dr. Smith thanked the board and said she is "honored and humbled" and looks forward to "working closely with our principals and central office to ensure coherent systems that support high quality teaching and learning, strengthen student engagement, and improve outcomes for every learner."
The board also confirmed Cecilia Lewis for the systemwide secondary role; Dr. Newsom summarized her background in student services, human resources supervision, and school leadership. Lewis thanked mentors and colleagues and said she plans to "pour every single ounce of my energy into our leaders so that we can enhance their focus on pouring every single ounce of their energy into student success."
Deborah Baker, recommended for assistant principal at St. Leonard Elementary, was serving as acting assistant principal and has prior experience as a dean and as a special education teacher. Baker expressed appreciation for being entrusted with the role and said she looks forward to partnering with students, parents and staff.
All three appointments were presented as routine personnel items; formal motions carried and each appointee spoke briefly after approval. No further personnel actions were taken during the meeting.
