County administration proposed funding $15,000 from the drug and alcohol education (DATE) fund and $55,860 from the county contingency fund.
Commissioners pressed the sheriff on logistics. Hayes said the school system would assist with meals and that program locations being considered include Live Oak, Sherwood, Northside, Lamar Rees and West Town elementary schools. On transportation he said the school system would coordinate movement for some field trips, but the program would primarily use drop-off/pick-up at sites.
Several commissioners encouraged outreach to corporate partners for in-kind equipment donations and proposed using the county internship program to supplement staffing. Commissioner Grama asked about duplicated line items in the budget and urged the sheriff—s office to pursue donations for athletic equipment before purchasing new items. Commissioner Jones emphasized speed, urging staff to stand up the program quickly and pursue donor letters and media outreach.
County staff said a site would be identified and additional logistical information provided by the following Monday, and commissioners requested that the sheriff capture evaluation data and return a post-program report.
