Committee members used the April 14 meeting to update one another on the village administrator and police chief searches and on follow-up items from a recent management audit.
The mayor said the police chief nomination has undergone an "extensive" process with outside input and that he had forwarded a recommendation to the council for a vote. "I went ahead and made my recommendation to council. It's now on them to vote my nomination on that," the mayor said.
On the village administrator search, the mayor said he plans a similarly rigorous process: recruit long-term candidates while arranging an interim administrator to provide immediate coverage and help stabilize operations. He said he had contacted organizations that assist with municipal searches and had identified two potential interim candidates who could attend the next council meeting.
To smooth a transition, the mayor has asked department heads for weekly reports summarizing activities, pressure points and fixes so a new or interim administrator can onboard quickly. He described collecting weekly reports from maintenance, police and IT and said fiscal reporting was still being added. Committee members urged that audit findings include nuance from employee interviews and operational context, not just a checklist of duties.
Members raised procedural obstacles that have slowed recruitment and confirmation: email server changes hindered notice and some meetings were not properly noticed, which prevented quorum at times. The chair and others asked staff to ensure candidate materials are properly circulated and to schedule candidates to appear at the next council meeting to answer questions in person.
No formal votes were taken on hiring at this meeting. Members agreed to continue recruitment activity, provide candidate information to council, and bring interim candidates to the next council meeting to respond to questions.
