Utility Administrator David Valentine said the pipe showed extensive structural failure, including a near-full split, cracks and pinholes. The break occurred about 13 feet from a prior incident in the same run, suggesting localized deterioration. The failure also affected the stormwater system; water traveled roughly 560 feet from the break due to old clay storm lines with root intrusion and multiple cracks. Public crews replaced 14 feet of broken storm line and jet-rodded adjacent segments to clear obstructions.
When Councilmember Mark Leshinski asked how much of the line should be replaced, Utility Administrator David Valentine answered, "All of it!" Council discussed pursuing funding options for major water-system repairs and full pipe replacement; no specific funding source was identified at the March 9 meeting.
Village staff noted February consumption was higher because of the break but that overall consumption remains about 30 percent below last year. Council did not vote on an immediate long-term replacement plan at the meeting but flagged the item for follow-up while repairs continue.
