The Carbon County Open Space Advisory Board discussed a proposal to place small trail markers with a central QR code that would link directly to the county’s Open Space program page and outreach materials.
Anna presented draft sign concepts and said the code could take visitors to a landing page with the program description and video. "It goes right to our website page then," Anna said. She also told the group that many free QR generators produce short-lived links and that services that embed a logo can require an annual fee; "it's, like, $200 annually to pay to just keep it running," she said.
Board members suggested alternatives for hosting and design: running the code through the county marketing office or through PMVB, including the QR on future project-acknowledgment signs, and using rack cards as an interim outreach tool. Members discussed mounting and design details (size to fit a 4-by-4 post, drilling holes for mounting, and a diamond shape to ease top/bottom mounting), and agreed to consider both kiosk and post placements depending on ownership. "The D&L Trail is owned by all the municipalities along the trail," a committee member noted, recommending that staff coordinate with the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and town officials before placing markers.
Board members emphasized practical next steps: Anna will compile a list of candidate locations, bring a map to the next meeting, and follow up with marina, parks and trail coordinators and sportsmen's clubs for placement and distribution. Staff and one committee member recommended adding a short "How did you find us?" poll or referral field on the county page because free QR services might not provide analytics. The board also discussed using rack cards and distributing materials at sporting clubs, farm stores and township buildings as a low-cost first step.
What’s next: staff will check hosting options and analytics capability with the county marketing office and PMVB, produce a location map for the next meeting, and return with cost estimates and proposed mounting details.
