The Pine Lake Preparatory Board of Directors met remotely on Aug. 5, 2024, moved into executive session for personnel matters and, after returning to open session, voted to withhold a closed-session minute from Jan. 16, 2018 and to approve five new hires.
Chair Sarah Phillips led the meeting, which began at 7:01 p.m. and included board members Bobby Peterson (Treasurer), Chris Cody (Secretary), Dorothy Powers Gorman, Manish Jain, Brie Leggat Johnson and Bryan Thurtle-Schmidt. Vice-Chair Fred Shilmover and board member Arlene Mu were absent. School leadership listed as present included Andrew Moceri and Shelly Sims, along with Lori Reuter, Tim Hoffman, Sam Ranallo and Brant Hyatt.
At 7:02 p.m. the board moved into executive session under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 143-318.11(a) to consider qualifications, performance or complaints related to public officers or employees. The motion to enter executive session was made by Chair Sarah Phillips and seconded by Brie Leggat Johnson; the minutes record the motion as passed and list no abstentions.
The board returned to open session at 7:20 p.m. and voted to withhold from public inspection the minutes of a closed session held Jan. 16, 2018, citing N.C. Gen. Stat. § 143-318.10(e). That motion was also made by Sarah Phillips and seconded by Brie Leggat Johnson; the minutes again record the motion as passed with no abstentions. The meeting minutes do not include individual vote tallies and record only that the motions passed and that there were no abstentions.
During the resumed open session the board approved the following hires: Amy Orlando, Lower School part-time associate; Eileen Anderson, part-time Exceptional Children teacher for Middle/Upper School; Dr. Kimberly Jurek, Upper School Exceptional Children’s teacher; Ryan Kurzec, campus maintenance technician; and Andrea Leluika, registrar. The motion to approve the hires was made by Sarah Phillips, seconded by Brie Leggat Johnson, and recorded as passed with no abstentions.
The board moved to adjourn at 7:22 p.m.; the motion was made by Sarah Phillips, seconded by Brie Leggat Johnson, and recorded as passed with no abstentions. The special meeting record lists a remote Zoom link for public access and the meeting minutes note compliance with the State Government Ethics Act and the Open Meetings law.
