Emery County awarded grant to fund trail crew hires; training for side-by-sides and e-bikes planned

Wade Allinson, introduced to the committee at the start of his report, said the grant award means Emery County will be able to hire seasonal staff to support trail maintenance and signing. “We’re glad to report that Emery County is a recipient,” Allinson said, and described plans to roll a side-by-side certification course out first to search-and-rescue teams and then to other instructors.
Committee members discussed the state’s staffing timeline. Allinson said the state has hired trail crews and that the county’s crew positions will be ongoing; the positions discussed include two part-time slots for the county listing described later in the meeting. He also summarized current e-bike classifications used in state guidance — class 1 (pedal-assist up to 20 mph), class 2 (pedal-assist or throttle-controlled), and class 3 (pedal-assist over 28 mph) — and noted a July effective date for related legislation and outreach.
Andy (committee member) said the grant award also creates hiring opportunities in the office: the job posting to hire seasonals is live and “open until the fifteenth,” with two 29.5-hour positions expected to be advertised to local applicants. Andy added that the office is coordinating with the Department of Public Safety on course design for e-bike/side-by-side training.
Why it matters: County and state trail crews maintain routes used by thousands of visitors each season and expanded staffing and standardized training aim to reduce off-trail impacts and improve responder safety. The committee emphasized that the training will be online at first and that the state and local offices will coordinate rollout timing.
Next steps: Committee staff said they will accept applications until the advertised deadline, assemble review panels, and forward awards through the travel board and county commission in May.
