Director Mandy Cyr presented the district’s winter NWEA MAP results to the school committee on March 25, describing both achievement and growth metrics and recommending continued monitoring of specific cohorts.
Cyr said the report measures national-comparison achievement and year-to-date growth. She said the district is “trending upward” in both math and reading and that no grade falls below the 30th percentile in math growth this winter. She highlighted that last year’s fifth-grade cohort was at the 14th percentile in growth and that the current fifth-grade cohort moved into the 30th percentile this year.
Cyr pointed to strong performance in secondary math, saying several grades (8–10) are at or above the 50th percentile in achievement, and described reading as “very encouraging,” with every grade at or above the 40th percentile in achievement. She noted that grade-level growth can vary cohort to cohort but said evidence of sustained instructional gains is visible across multiple grades.
Committee members asked about historical comparisons, interventions for students needing added support, and how Biddeford’s scores compare with similar districts. Cyr said historical fall reports will be provided and agreed to bring intervention strategies to the curriculum committee for a future agenda.
What’s next: the district will continue to monitor the spring assessment and the curriculum committee will receive more detailed intervention and historical-comparison data at a later meeting.
