Committee honors departing superintendent, records an "exemplary" evaluation
Summary
The committee entered a public record praising Superintendent Dr. Steven Zweig for six years of leadership and recorded an overall "exemplary" rating; he thanked staff and highlighted district work on equity, early learning and educator diversity.
On March 23 the Salem School Committee entered into the public record an evaluation rating Superintendent Doctor Zweig as "exemplary" across instructional leadership, management and operations, and family and community engagement.
Committee members and local leaders used the meeting to recognize Dr. Zweig’s six years in Salem. A city citation was read honoring his tenure and accomplishments in the district, including work on early childhood programs, career and technical education, educator diversity and strategic planning. Representative Manny Cruz and several committee members offered public praise and presented a citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives congratulating Dr. Zweig on his appointment to a statewide role.
Members summarized evaluations noting increases in educator diversity (from roughly 10.8% to 22.7% staff of color since 2020–21 and an increase in teachers of color from 5.7% to 17.1%, as cited in the evaluations), improvements in retention and student outcomes, and extensive community outreach. The chair entered a summary of the evaluation into the record and noted that the district will be led in the near term by Deputy Superintendent Mark Carboni and the executive leadership team.
Dr. Zweig used his remarks to thank staff, unions and the community, reflect on the district’s progress and underscore the importance of the people who delivered the work. He did not receive a formal vote on the evaluation (the evaluation was entered into the record). The committee observed gifts, presentations and public thanks as part of his final regular meeting.
