Vernon County to study sanitarian staffing after consortium dissolves; board backs exploring a vehicle option

The Vernon County Health Department informed the Board of Health on May 9 that the Environmental Health Consortium shared with neighboring counties will dissolve effective Jan. 1, 2024. Health Officer Amy Kleiber said the current consortium sanitarian, Troy Moris, will no longer travel to Vernon County as a result.
Kleiber said staff will complete a cost analysis of the agent program and financing before any decision about replacing coverage. The minutes record that the current sanitarian’s mileage runs about $600 per month, and the department discussed travel expense and the possible purchase of a vehicle to reduce ongoing mileage costs.
Board member David Eggen moved that the health department explore vehicle lease versus purchase options to support sanitarian work; Duane Koons seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. The minutes do not record a decision to hire a replacement sanitarian or the preferred procurement option; staff were directed to analyze costs and report back.
The board also recorded WIC updates as none and adjourned the meeting at 2:19 p.m.
