Oklahoma County proclaims May as Home and Community Education Week, honors OHCE volunteers

The Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation declaring May as Home and Community Education (OHCE) Week and recognized the county OHCE chapter for long-standing volunteer work.
The chair read the resolution, which noted the organization’s origins in 1910 and described its historic mission to teach farm women techniques such as gardening, canning and nutrition. The proclamation said the organization now focuses on leadership development and volunteer service to strengthen communities.
Lisa Hamblin, who identified herself as an Oklahoma County OSU Extension family and consumer sciences educator and advisor to the county OHCE organization, thanked the board for the recognition and described several county projects: quilting groups that make quilts for Pivot Incorporated’s tiny homes for youth, a Christmas stocking project run in partnership with Sunbeam Family Services and Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, and other community outreach. Hamblin told commissioners OHCE members in Oklahoma County logged more than 22,000 volunteer hours in 2025 and that the county chapter comprises seven groups and about 75 members.
The chair closed by thanking the OHCE representatives for attending. The proclamation was approved by unanimous voice vote during the meeting.
