The Benton City mayor told council on July 1 that he has requested proposals from lobbyists to represent Benton City in Olympia to pursue funding for major projects, such as bridges and traffic rerouting.
“Every mayor I talked to and city manager I talked to said, do it,” the mayor said, describing how other small cities use lobbyists to secure state funding. He estimated the monthly cost would likely fall in the $2,000–$2,500 range and said the city will bring proposals back to council for consideration in the next few months.
Council members said any hire should show a clear return on investment and that proposals should be evaluated for cost, expected outcomes and demonstrated results from other jurisdictions. No contract award or commitment was made at the July 1 meeting; staff will present formal proposals at a future meeting for council consideration.
