Doug Moore, a local resident who led the Sanderson Community Center renovation effort, told commissioners the project began last spring and has resolved many long‑standing problems: new windows, an ADA bathroom addition, repaired doors and updated locks. Moore said he secured plans and handled some unexpected repairs personally to save money and proposed using leftover savings for outdoor lighting, repainting and a small pavilion and grill.
Moore asked the board to consider a five‑member community advisory committee to monitor the center and report needs to the district commissioner and county manager. "I want this to be totally self‑support," Moore said, advocating for community oversight and minimal ongoing county subsidy.
County staff proposed modest increases to the center's rental fees to reflect the added restroom and improvements while keeping the facility affordable for private, family and church events. Staff explained the current private‑event rate and proposed a $50 increase for most private events and a larger increase for commercial events; church events would remain at a lower flat rate. The board approved the proposed rates by voice vote and asked staff to draft a formal management and maintenance plan and return with options for parking improvements, gazebo funding and potential program revenue to help sustain operations.
Commissioners praised Moore's volunteer work and the community's role in restoring the facility. They asked staff to present a recommended fee schedule management approach and to evaluate whether lawn‑service or other contracts should be adjusted to reflect current usage and maintenance needs. The board carried the motion to adopt the new rates without recorded opposition.
