Beaumont council gives preliminary approval to expand animal shelter into Building E

The Beaumont City Council approved preliminary plans on Feb. 3 to expand Beaumont Animal Services into part of Building E, on the north side of City Hall, Reporter Sarah Lauer said. The planned renovation is intended to add intake, treatment, evaluation and adoption space.
The expansion’s first phase would convert the north end of Building E into “a fully operational animal shelter featuring a public lobby, outdoor yard, clinic area, and expanded space for 24 kennels,” Lauer reported. "This expansion will allow animal services to care for more animals, focusing on intake, treatment, evaluation, and adoption," she said.
Lauer noted the city’s previous shelter contract ended in November 2024 and that animal control has responded to more than 2,500 calls for service since that contract ended, increasing pressure on kennel capacity and staff resources. The report said the project would nearly quadruple the size of the current facility.
The report did not include a council vote tally or detail next procedural steps such as final design approval or funding sources. The expanded facility is presented by city staff as one of several projects aimed at supporting Beaumont residents and their pets.
