Mayor Springer and council approve 1% property-tax increase for 2026

Mayor Springer and the City Council on Nov. 19 approved a 1% increase in the city property-tax levy for 2026.
Tara, a city staff member presenting the ordinance’s second and final read, told the council the measure must be submitted to the county by the end of the month and recommended taking the full 1% increase. "I highly recommend you take the full 1%," she said, and added the increase would account for about $4,800 in city revenue. Tara gave a homeowner example: on a $400,000 property the change would amount to roughly $6.65 for the year.
Councilman Skinner moved to adopt the property-tax ordinance at 1%; the motion was seconded by Member Colette and carried on voice vote. The ordinance number given in the meeting record was property tax ordinance 140101.
The council did not record extended debate on the measure during the meeting. Tara said the second and final read of the budget ordinance is scheduled for Dec. 3, and that the city can delay the read if additional time is needed.
The council’s action satisfies the county filing deadline required to set the levy for the coming year; the ordinance will be forwarded for the county’s processing as directed by staff.
