Bill to make farmworker housing more competitive for tax credits wins committee backing

Assemblymember Arambula presented AB 2,270, saying farmworkers face severe housing instability and that current amenity-proximity scoring disadvantages farmworker housing because these projects must be located near agricultural land rather than dense services. Arambula said he would accept proposed committee amendments and asked the California Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTAC) to consider changes through regulation.
Alejandro Solis of La Cooperativa Campesina testified in support, noting the organization provides housing and services to migrant and seasonal farmworkers and its member network serves over 153,000 clients annually. "We would like to request your support for this legislation to ensure that farmworker housing projects can fairly compete for tax credits," Solis said.
Committee members praised the bill as an equity measure but noted the companion budget question: ensuring sufficient Low-Income Housing Tax Credit funding. Several members said they would move the bill pending quorum and would watch for budget and implementation details.
The committee later returned to AB 2,270, moved the measure as amended, and the clerk announced the result as 11 to 0 in favor. The committee adjourned after completing the agenda.
