SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly on March 25 adopted House Resolution 109 to recognize April 27, 2026, as a day to honor the state’s janitorial and cleaning workforce.
Assemblymember Schiavo, the resolution’s sponsor, told the chamber that janitors and property service workers are “truly the first line of defense against the spread of infectious disease,” and described shadowing overnight cleaning crews to highlight the physical demands of the work.
Members on both sides of the aisle thanked janitorial staff who maintain state buildings and thanked union and DGS workers for the work they do in state facilities. Assemblymember Gibson said the measure elevated work that often goes unseen and asked colleagues for a strong aye vote.
Clerk records show 58 coauthors were added during the coauthor roll. The Assembly then took a voice vote and the presiding officer declared HR 109 adopted.
The resolution is ceremonial and lauds the efforts of janitors for public health, recycling and maintenance work; it does not authorize new spending or change law.
