Public Arts Commission moves to define a "commemorative collection" for Palm Springs art holdings

The Palm Springs Public Arts Commission met in a special session Feb. 26 to advance a proposal creating a separate "commemorative collection" for works that primarily memorialize people, places or events, and to outline the eligibility, outreach and funding requirements applicants must meet.

The chair framed the issue as one of classification and stewardship: many pieces in the city's holdings (the John F. Kennedy bus at the airport, the Sonny Bono fountain, plaques such as the Morse kite markers) were never intended to be artist-driven public art and instead serve a commemorative purpose. "We need to understand how the community understands and engages with our collection," the chair said, arguing the commission should treat commemorative items as a distinct sub-collection while keeping all works under the commission's guardianship.
