Residents urge Yuma council for more transparency and balanced presentations on data centers

During the call to the public at the April 15 Yuma City Council meeting, multiple residents appealed to the council for clearer, earlier information about major projects and specifically raised concerns about proposed data centers.

Lucas Stanchu told the council he opposes construction of data centers in the Desert Southwest and asked the city to allow independent community advocates the same type of longer, detailed presentations investor groups receive at regional economic-development sessions. "Until such a system exists, I'll continue showing up periodically to share the information, 3 minutes at a time," Stanchu said. He cited private-sector research and university studies to question claims that data-center growth is inevitable.

Councilmembers had already signaled at the meeting that data centers are an ongoing topic: several members described a recent GYDC data-center seminar and emphasized that no final decisions had been made. Councilmember Morales asked staff to flag agenda items when they relate to data-center proposals so the council and public can prepare and evaluate potential impacts ahead of formal action.

Carlos Adams told the council he had filed a transparency initiative and handed copies to the clerk, the city attorney and staff. He said the initiative requires earlier notice and public impact studies on how major projects could affect traffic, water, infrastructure, noise and public safety, and that he is prepared to pursue a voter petition if the council does not adopt similar measures.
