Simi Valley board selects Kate Snowden as principal of Monte Vista Independent Learning Academy

The Simi Valley Unified School District board voted 5-0 to appoint Kate Snowden as the next principal of Monte Vista Independent Learning Academy following a national search and staff interviews. Superintendent Doctor Youssef told the board the district received 29 applications and narrowed the field to finalists before naming Snowden.

Snowden, who returns to the district after serving as a principal elsewhere, thanked trustees and district staff and said she is ‘‘committed to building upon and growing the amazing program the staff at Monte Vista have built.’’ She told the board she plans to lead with ‘‘creativity, innovation, inclusivity, and excellence’’ and described Monte Vista as a place that provides flexible, student-centered education.

The superintendent said staff met with Monte Vista employees during the selection process and described the finalist pool as a ‘‘very strong competitive pool’’ aligned with the site’s needs. Trustees offered congratulations and noted Snowden’s familiarity with the community; several trustees praised her prior experience in district schools.

The appointment is effective immediately. No additional personnel actions were announced in open session beyond the board’s 5-0 vote to approve the selection.

What’s next: Snowden will assume leadership responsibilities at Monte Vista and work with staff on transition details highlighted in the district’s selection process. The board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 11.
