Resident urges opposition to proposed AI data center in Monterey Park

Randy Kaye, a San Gabriel resident, used public comment time at the Jan. 20 council meeting to urge neighboring cities and residents to oppose a proposed AI data center at 1977 Saturn Street in Monterey Park and to attend a rally scheduled for 5 p.m. the following day.
"I'm here to talk about the proposed AI data center in Monterey Park at 1977 Saturn Street," Kaye said. He told the council he lives about 85 feet from the Monterey Park border, said most nearby residents have not been informed about the project and alleged that the site's owner remains undisclosed. "The owner of the center is a secret," Kaye said, and he urged people to read media coverage and watch a project video from Jan. 10.
Kaye raised several concerns: he said community outreach appears limited to a 500-foot radius around the site, questioned whether the city and applicant have adequately informed neighboring cities, and asked whether the local water supply would be sufficient for firefighting if a large facility caught fire, citing the Eaton fire as an example. He also said "Senator Sasha Renee Perez has sent a letter to Monterey Park expressing her concerns" and requesting a full environmental impact study.
Kaye encouraged residents of Montebello, South Monterey Park, South San Gabriel and Rosemead to become involved and asked the council and listeners to inform neighbors. The council did not take action on the item; Kaye framed his remarks as a public call to organize and monitor the Monterey Park process.
No council motion or staff response to the merits of the proposal was recorded during Kaye's comment period. Additional public hearings and city-level entitlements will be controlled by the jurisdiction where the project is located, Monterey Park.
