Staff told the board the proposal exceeds the code's allowed square footage because the city's sign ordinance counts double-faced projecting signs by face; the applicant proposed 20-square-foot faces that together exceed allowable area by 34 square feet. Staff recommended approval as the projecting sign would aid visibility and be consistent with the business's character.
Applicant representative Brett said a single-sided sign had been temporarily installed to provide exposure during build-out and that the proposed double-faced sign would replace that and could be installed after removing the temporary fixture. Board members offered minor design suggestions, including adding a frame and increasing the size of secondary text for legibility; the applicant said the logo has dimensional letters and a green trim that addresses some of the visual concerns.
After deliberation a motion to approve the sign was made and seconded. The board recorded the motion as passing with three ayes and two absences/recusals. Staff reminded the applicant of a seven-day appeal period and that any appeal must be filed with the planning department. The approval includes the standard condition that work in any Caltrans right-of-way requires separate Caltrans permits.
