The Town of Red Springs voted July 4 to adopt a step-pay plan for police officers intended to improve recruitment and retention.
Town Manager told the council the current base salary for police officers is $43,000 annually and proposed modest step increases tied to length of service: no increase for 0–2 years, an additional $500 for 3–4 years of service, $1,000 for 5–7 years, and $1,500 for 8–10 years (capped at $1,500 above base). "So, again, it's not a whole lot... but I think that this again, you know, it encourages our current officers to stay," the manager said.
A commissioner moved to accept the step plan; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The chair asked the clerk to perform a salary-range study to determine whether the town’s base pay should be adjusted, noting other local law-enforcement employers are increasing base pay and the town may need to respond in future budgets.
The council did not set a dollar figure to increase the base salary at the meeting; the manager said staff would report back with comparative ranges.
